Can I get homeowners insurance if I have a pool?
In short, the answer is most likely yes. However, each situation is different so a discussion with your insurance agent is your best bet. In many cases, your homeowners insurance will cover damages to your pool due to storms, falling trees, etc. Depending on your basic coverage limitations, your insurance agent might suggest increasing your coverage based on the size of the pool and any other accessories such as a deck or slides.
You will also want to take a look at your liability coverage. It will likely be suggested that you extend your coverage with the increase of potential injury that a pool may bring. An umbrella policy can be used to cover liability gaps.
As Bob DeVito states in the video above, it is highly recommended that you have a full fence and locking gate surrounding your pool area. Not only will this provide you with peace of mind knowing that your children or pets are safe, but it also offers protection against neighbors entering and possibly getting injured. The U.S. Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a fence that is at least 4 feet tall with self-closing and self-latching gates.
Because each situation can be different from the next, don’t hesitate to reach out to your local insurance agent to get more detailed information about your policies. Following the right steps to insure your backyard is safe can lead to a relaxing summer in your beautiful private pool!
