Anchorage Independent School System
When asking people why they moved to Anchorage, KY, one of the most common answers is the school. Anchorage is located about 20 minutes outside of downtown Louisville which makes the work commute easy and the investment in their childs education priceless. Anchorage has its own Independent school system with an impeccable record of student high scores, state ranking, and retention rates. The Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress, K-PREP ranked Anchorage as the number one school in Kentucky in 2012.
In Kentucky, an Independent School does not cover an entire county; instead it usually refers to an area covered by a city or close surrounding cities. They still adhere to the required testing by the state and follow the Jefferson County Public School system calendar and regulations but have more control over many decisions. They are the only Independent school in Jefferson County and have been operating for over a hundred years. The school teaches children from Kindergarten through 8th grade. In this district, there is a ratio of about 16 students to every teacher for each classroom.
While state testing focuses on math, science, and english, Anchorage focuses on the “value of the whole child.” This means that subjects like physical education, the arts, and foreign language hold a high importance as well. Spanish is taught beginning in kindergarten. One of the most interesting and unique aspects of Anchorage school is their parent involvement.
